Filmed in Hawaii in 1961, Blue Hawaii was Elvis's most successful film, grossing over 31 million dollars at the box office. The soundtrack earned Elvis his 13th gold album. The film is the story of Chad, a young man just released from the Army, who comes home to Honolulu to finally spread his wings and embark on the great adventure that is life. Resisting his father's attempt to get him to work at the family business, Chad gets a job as a tour guide and is hired by a group of girls to tour Hawaii. The first part of the film was made on Oahu as Chad does his best to show all a good time, getting along with everyone except a snobby little rich girl named Ellie.
After seeing Oahu, Chad and the girls fly to Kauai, the stunning Garden Island. They check in to the historic Coco Palms Resort where much of the remainder of the film was made. Heavily damaged by Hurricane Iniki in 1992, the Coco Palms has been closed for six years, much to the dismay of Elvis fans the world over. Prior to its' closing, tens of thousands of Elvis fans came from countries far and wide to see where Elvis made the beautiful wedding scene in Blue Hawaii. Hawaii Movie Tours is fortunate enough to be able to tour the Coco Palms and show its' guests where all this happened. This is the most popular stop on our tour.
As the story line continues, Chad's girlfriend arrives on the island unexpectedly and catches him in compromising situations(all very innocent)with the other girls. He is in deep doodoo. Ellie tries to kill herself after being rejected by Chad and he saves her life, spanks her butt and finally makes friends with her. He soon makes up with his sweetie and the world famous wedding scene is next. Following are photos from the film.
