Text Box: On September 11, 1992, the island of Kauai was devastated by a category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Iniki. The most powerful storm to ever hit Hawaii in recorded times, Hurricane Iniki forever opened our eyes to Mother Nature's unbelievable power. It also became our own  9/11.
On the following pages is the story of Iniki, as seen through my eyes and the lens of my camera. At the time, I earned my living taking pictures, mostly of people. Little did I know that one day, that camera would record unbelievable devastation.
As you read this, keep in mind that a hurricane actually hitting Hawaii is a very rare event. Since records have been kept, only three have hit the state. The first two, Dot in 1957, and Ewa in 1982, were just a stiff blow compared to the incredible power of a storm the residents of Kauai will never forget.
A few facts about Iniki. The Navy's wind meter at Kokee broke at 227 mph. 70% of the homes and 80% of the hotel rooms on the island were heavily damaged or destroyed. Most of the island had no power for three months. Some areas did not power up until almost a year later. Thousands were left homeless.
It is now 2003 and I still think about the storm, so putting this down in writing and posting my photos are therapy for me and perhaps something of interest to you.
